Act your age

Boys like to consume and destroy things, but men understand the joy of creating and restoring.

Agree?

I agree but they still enjoy a good demolition.

I think there's definitely a mix of both.

Maybe that is because there will always be a little boy in every man. It helps men still enjoy the simpler things in life.

Where I was going with this was that there is a certain brand of joy that comes with a job well done. This, however, is an acquired taste and something that boys do not innately understand. There is a simple excitement in blowing something up, for instance, that is much more easily experienced than finding the joy that comes with refinishing antique furniture. A boy will see sanding furniture as drudgery, a man will see it as the path to a deep sense of accomplishment.

What brought this on was that my friend Jared fixed my bike for me over the past week. I had two bent rims, and just about everything needed to be "tuned". I paid him back for the parts, but he wouldn't let me pay him for his time because he said he really enjoyed the work.

Boys don't enjoy work. They don't yet understand the link between work and true satisfaction. This is something that fathers need to teach their sons, despite endless appeals for "mercy", because their boys will need to become men eventually. I maintain that not teaching your son the joy of hard work is tantamount to not helping your son become a man. Thankfully, my dad spent a great deal of time working alongside me when I was a child so could learn this lesson from his life.

Well said. As a parent, one of my responsibilities is molding the character (which I know is a very broad term) of my children. One of the better ways to grow character in a person is through genuine hard work.
