Sunday School is Good

Starting with the new year, Pete experienced a major life-event. He started attending the 3 Year Olds Sunday School class at church. The first week or two was a little rough for him, mostly because he doesn't sit still all that well. Of course, have you ever met a 3 year old boy who sits still? Yeah, me neither.

One of the best things they do in his class is scripture memory. Last week, Pete learned part of Luke 2:14, "Glory to God in the highest." Not bad for a 3 year old.

This morning we worked on his latest one, part of 1 Corinthians 8:6, "There is but one Lord, Jesus Christ." A few minutes later, Pete had left the table and was in the living room playing with several of his stuffed animals. Amanda and I overheard him singing, in his best Oscar the Grouch voice, "Der is wun wooord Jezez Kwist. Der is wun wooord Jezez Kwist." That's enough to make any dad's day.

If you've ever taught a Sunday School class for kids anywhere from 3 years old through 3rd grade, you may have had a discouraging suspicion that you were wasting your time. The kids don't listen and don't sit still. They spill stuff. They miss the point of your best age-appropriate theological questions. It's a rough job. However, as the parent of one of the kids who doesn't listen, who spills stuff, and who misses the point of your best age-appropriate theological questions, I appreciate the effort. It's not a waste of time. My son is hiding God's word in his heart, and it is renewing his mind as we speak. That kind of thing can really make a difference in a kid's life. Pete and Dawn Tompkins, thank you for your ministry to my son. Thank you vewwy much.
