Both sides are saying last year's game is ancient history, but I would expect that the Blackshirts have just a little bit of a chip on their shoulder tonight.
GO BIG RED!
Everyone else from church has their air show pictures up already, so I guess it's about time for me to get mine up as well.
…the most amazing woman in the world agreed to spend the rest of her life with me. She is a beautiful wife, a wonderful mother, an attentive help-meet, and the best friend I've ever had.
House and wealth are inherited from fathers, but a prudent wife is from the Lord.
-Proverbs 19:14An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels.
-Proverbs 31:10
I still wonder how a guy like me was able to get a girl like her to agree to marry me. The only explanation I can come up with is that our God has been abundantly gracious to me, blessing me with a wife far better than I deserve.
In reality, I would probably be much better paired with the quarrelsome wife of Proverbs 25:24 or Proverbs 27:15. Praise God for his grace.
Honey, if you're reading this, happy anniversary, I love you, and I thank God that you love me back.
Jim over at Lutheran Guest wrote an interesting post about how Adam and Eve forfeited their humanity, in a sense, when they fell in the garden.
He's not sure if he buys it, but I think it is an interesting thought. See what you think…

Did they think that dropping "State" from their name they would make them a more respectable opponent? They'll always be Troy State to me.
I'm reminded of a scene from Monty Python's Life of Brian:
Brian: 'Look, you've got it all wrong! You don't NEED to follow ME, you don't NEED to follow ANYBODY! You've got to think for yourselves! You're ALL individuals!'
The Crowd (speaking in unison): 'Yes! We're all individuals!'
Brian: 'You're all different!'
The Crowd (in unison): 'Yes, we ARE all different!'
Man in crowd: 'I'm not…'
The Crowd: 'Shhh!'
This week, life imitates art:
The Pope: "Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." (quoting a 14th century emperor, in the context of a discussion of the danger of human reason without the application of God's word)
Muslims: "You dog of Rome! How dare you say that Mohammed's religion is evil and violent! If you don't apologize and acknowledge Islam as a respectful, peace-loving faith we will attack you and burn down your churches."
The Pope has backed away from the statement, saying that he didn't really mean that Muslims are violent and evil, though their reaction seems to prove exactly that. If it weren't so depressing it might actually be funny.
Being a five-point Calvinist isn't as easy as it looks. The vast majority of evangelical Christian doctrine and theology these days comes from a more Arminian/Semi-Pelagian point of view. That's not to say that there are scads of rabid Arminians hiding around every corner waiting for an opportunity to defend the Remonstrants. I might even suggest that most who could be classified as Arminians have never even heard the term. You know, kind of like a fish who has never heard of the ocean.
If you are unfamiliar with this debate, this page does a pretty good job of explaining the two sides (monergism vs. synergism, Calvinism vs. Arminianism). This page might be helpful as well.
So what does this have to do with anything? Well, Wednesday night at church we had a training session for Awana, the children's ministry we will be rolling out next week. It is a really good program, from what my wife has told me, helping children to memorize scripture by the metric tonne. Amanda and I are both leaders (listeners, actually) with the T&T's and we can't wait to get started next week.
Admittedly, I came into the training session with a little bit of baggage. Awana has historically been very big in Southern Baptist circles, and baptist circles have historically (at least in the last 100 years) been of the Arminian persuasion. In my mind, Awana has always meant little kids walking an aisle during an altar call because their friend just did and it seems like the thing that all the cool kids are doing. You get to the front, you pray the "Sinner's Prayer," and you go home saved! Then, for decades to come, you can look back on that moment as proof that you were, are, and will be heaven-bound.
So, I was pleasantly surprised when the trainer, Rick Hattan, made a point to stress that we, as Awana leaders, need to be very careful to communicate that salvation isn't about praying a prayer at all. He went on to say Continue reading this post »
OK. I'm ready to make my USC game prediction. Well, OK, maybe not.
I came into the season cautiously optomistic that we could beat USC. Then, after watching Courtney Grixby falling down trying to keap up with a LA Tech receiver, I started to get some jitters. I had visions of tall, fast USC receivers scampering about behind our secondary unimpeded. I started to believe all of the "USC is the greatest football team ever, period" hype coming from the sports media.
So, around that point in time I started to think that Nebraska didn't stand a chance against USC. My prediction:
NU: 20 (2 touchdowns, 3 field goals)
USC: 31 (4 touchdowns, 1 field goal)
But, I've been rethinking my prediction. Yes, USC is good. Bill Callahan said in an interview that they didn't have a single weakness anywhere in their program. But, Arkansas was hanging in there with USC until they had a turnover meltdown in the second half and Nebraska is a better team than Arkansas.
I also find myself wondering if they really are that good, or if they are just receiving the standard media darling treatment they normally do. In a post written following the national championship game in which Texas defeated the glorious USC Trojans, I wrote about the media's gratuitous use of the term "dynasty" to describe USC's supposed three-peat:
Notre Dame is USC's only competition for the title of "Over-hyped Media Darling." So, is this team riding the same wave? Perhaps.
Maybe USC if absolutely amazing, and maybe they're not. One thing I know is that Zac Taylor and the Husker offense are too disciplined to follow in Arkansas' self destruction footsteps. I'm starting to think that we may have a chance… My prediction?
NU: 34 (4 touchdowns, 2 field goals)
USC: 31 (4 touchdowns, 1 field goal)
Might just be my heart telling me what I want to hear, but I'm cautiously optomistic about Nebraska's chances of pulling an upset.
